A Black History Gift for You: Brainwashed

As a fellow marketer, I am thrilled by Tom Burrell's latest gift to our community, Brainwashed : Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority. Founder of the renowned African American owned advertising agency, Burrell Communications in Chicago, IL, Tom Burrell has been a pioneer and catalyst in the industry for almost 50 years. One of the champions of target marketing, Burrell made a significant impact on my senior thesis, Images of African Americans in Advertising.

"His award-winning work promoted positive and realistic images of blacks and acknowledged the purchasing power of the African American community. Burrell is the founder of The Resolution Project, a nonprofit organization that promotes intra-racial dialogue and community-based new media “stop the brainwash” campaigns. "

The very premise of this book is the very soul of what gave birth to Chocolate Chip. Our families are much greater than how the media depicts us. As Burrell says we must counter the negativity with "positive propaganda" and change the very definition of who we are, not just for the mass media, but for own communities.

As caregivers and esteem builders for our children, this is an important read for our families. We must undo the brainwashing that exists with this generation so we can finally take off the shackles that bound our ancestors but still entrap some of our minds. Synopsis: Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority- Tom Burrell
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=brainwashed+challenging+the+myth+of+black+inferiority&box=Brainwas&pos=0
“Black people are not dark-skinned white people,” says advertising visionary Tom Burrell. In fact, they are much more. They are survivors of the Middle Passage and centuries of humiliation and deprivation, who have excelled against the odds, constantly making a way out of “No way!” At this pivotal point in history, the idea of black inferiority should have had a “Going-Out-of-Business Sale.” After all, Barack Obama has reached America’s Promised Land.
Yet, as Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority testifies, too many in black America are still wandering in the wilderness. In this powerful examination of “the greatest propaganda campaign of all time”—the masterful marketing of black inferiority, aka the BI Complex—Burrell poses ten disturbing questions that will make black people look in the mirror and ask why, nearly 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, so many blacks still think and act like slaves. Burrell’s acute awareness of the power of words and images to shift, shape, and change the collective consciousness has led him to connect the contemporary and historical dots that have brought us to this crossroads.
Brainwashed is not a reprimand—it is a call to action. It demands that we question our self-defeating attitudes and behaviors. Racism is not the issue; how we respond to media distortions and programmed self-hatred is the issue. It’s time to reverse the BI campaign with a globally based initiative that harnesses the power of new media and the wisdom of intergenerational coalitions. Provocative and powerful, Brainwashed dares to expose the wounds so that we, at last, can heal.

Happy Reading!!!

Healthy Nutritious Lunchboxes? Is it too good to be true?

First Lady Michelle Obama's call to action last week to stop childhood obesity inspired me to dust off a project I had been working on for 2 years. I've been on a mission to find healthy lunch options not only for my children, but all the families at my son's school. In 2008 I started packing lunches because it was the only alternative to the greasy spoon the school ordered from with a menu consisting of chicken nuggets, mac n cheese and the like on a daily basis.

While commiserating with another mom during a play date, she put me on to this great brand that I couldn't help but share with our Chocolate Chip family.

kidfresh:

"We believe that good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are essential to a child’s growth, health and well being. We have worked hard with nutritionists and chefs to create fun, nutritious meals that kids will actually enjoy while providing convenience and peace of mind to busy, caring parents." http://www.kidfresh.com/

They offer lunchboxes, dinners and mini meals including nutritional facts and ingredients which is particularly important for children with food allergies.

The website itself is AWESOME and a great source of information for parents. It includes nutrition tips, resources and the cutest testimonials from kidfresh's littlest fans and of course moms and dads too.

So where can you get kidfresh? The good news is the brand is now sold at your local WholeFoods.

I'm looking forward to testing this product out next week. Lord knows I'm tired of making turkey sandwiches just as much as my kids are tired of eating them:) Of course, we'll blog next week to let you know what we think.

Here's to our healthy children!

First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move Campaign

Can First Lady Michelle reduce childhood obesity in 1 generation? Well that's her plan as the President signs a memorandum on childhood obesity in the Oval Office today launching the Let's Move campaign.

Limiting television to tackle the development of sedentary lifestyles, smaller portion size, infusing fruits, vegetables and water into their daily diet and exercise are suggestions to help battle this nationwide epidemic. We personally saw a significant change in our daughter's body when we added gymnastics and tennis to her extracurricular activities which already included swimming and dance classes. The greatest benefit- she LOVES being physically active. You can always find her doing roundoffs and dancing around the house. The long term health benefits are numerous.

Data shows that 1 in 3 children are either over weight or obese. The number of overweight children ages 6 to 19 has tripled since 1970, according to a 2007 New England Journal of Medicine study. "We've seen the surge in obesity in this country is nothing short of a public health crisis, and it's threatening our children, it's threatening our families, and more importantly it's threatening the future of this nation," said First Lady Obama. "Higher rates of obesity are directly linked, as you've heard, to higher rates of chronic illnesses like heart disease and cancer and diabetes", she added.

Check out your neighborhood department of recreation for affordable programs to increase your child's level of physical activity. You never know what you might find from basketball and baseball clinics to ice skating lessons. Let your tax dollars work toward improving your family's health.

Watch the First Lady introduce the campaign tonight 2/9/10 on CNN's Larry King Live at 9pm EST. Need to gear up to battle childhood obesity in your home/community? Check out the links below for 7 stories on childhood obesity and an illustration of the physical complications of childhood obesity.
